Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian has issued a warning to Washington criticizing the US move to strengthen ties with Taiwan. “Please don’t play with fire,” he said. At the same time, Beijing called on the United States to adhere to China's policy.
A Chinese spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying that all official contacts between the United States and Taiwan should be stopped and that the United States should not send a wrong message to Taiwan's independence aspirants.

The Chinese spokesman also urged Washington not to jeopardize Sino-US relations and the peace and stability around the Taiwan Strait.
The administration of Joe Biden issued a new directive on Taiwan on Friday (April 9th), lifting some restrictions on meeting Taiwanese officials with U.S. officials. China issued the warning shortly after the directive was issued.
Tensions have risen in Taiwan's airspace. The Chinese Defense Ministry claimed that four Chinese J-16 fighter jets and a submarine destroyer aircraft flew over Taiwan's airspace yesterday (Tuesday).
