The volcanic eruption of La Sufria in the Caribbean island of St. Vincent is still going on. As a result of the fire, white ash is falling like snow in the capital of the island, Kingstown. The news was reported on Sunday. Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes and seek refuge, and the water supply to most parts of the island has been cut off, the report said.

The country's prime minister, Ralph Gonzalez, said about 3,000 people had spent Friday night in emergency shelters. In addition, about 16,000 people have been evacuated from shady areas or unprotected areas. He added that it was not yet clear how much more ash the volcano would emit. Some scientists warned that the eruption could continue for days or weeks.

The volcanic ash traveled more than 100 miles east across St. Vincent on Saturday. Officials on the island of Barbados have urged people to stay indoors. About 48 miles north of St. Vincent, people on the island of St. Lucia have also found ash. The La Sufria volcano has been dormant since 1989. The first signs of an eruption were seen last Thursday evening.
